Biography Of President: Dr. Abdiweli Mohamed Ali
A Somali American economist, professor and politician, President Abdiweliserved as the Prime Minister of Somalia from June 2011 to October 2012, and briefly afterwards as a Member of Parliament in the newly formed Federal Parliament of Somaliaprior to his election in Puntland.
During his time as Premier, Dr. Abdiweli is credited with having devised and implemented the formal “Roadmap for the End of Transition”, a political process which provided clear benchmarks leading toward the establishment of permanent democratic institutions in the country and out of the much delayed transitional period.
Equally, Dr.Abdiweli’s Government with the support of African Union troops successfully drove out the terror group Alshabab from the capital city of Mogadishu bring the entire city under government for the first time since 1991 and turning the tide againstAlshabab.He was also instrumental in the response to the 2011 famine relief effort, where the country was faced with the worst drought and resulting famine in 60 plus years.
Dr. Abdiweli Mohamed Ali has set out an ambiguous agenda and has committed the state to renewing and developing its infrastructure and the expansion of economic and livelihood opportunities for Puntland residents. President Abdiweli‘s administration also initiated major reforms that had eluded other elected leadership, reforming the state’s public and civil service sector, public finance, justice and security. Additionally, heis committed to restarting the democratization process in the state and has set the target of one man/woman vote in 2019.
Prior to entering politics Dr. Abdiweli Mohamed Ali was an Associate Professor at Niagara University in New York State.
